What comes out of a Pennsylvania paycheck

Net pay = Gross − Federal income tax − (Gross × 3.07%) − Social Security − Medicare − Pre-tax deductions

Pennsylvania is one of a handful of states with a true flat income tax: every taxable dollar is taxed at 3.07%, with no brackets and no difference between single and joint filers. Notably, Pennsylvania also taxes gross wages more directly than most states — it does not allow the same pre-tax deductions (like traditional 401(k) contributions) to reduce PA-taxable wages the way they reduce federal taxable wages, though this calculator applies pre-tax deductions consistently for simplicity.

Worked example — $80,000, single, biweekly

Taxable after $4,000 pre-tax and $15,000 federal standard deduction: $61,000 federal. PA state tax applies to $76,000 (gross minus pre-tax deductions): $76,000 × 3.07% = $2,333.

Federal tax ≈ $8,334 · PA state tax ≈ $2,333 · Social Security $4,960 · Medicare $1,160.

Annual take-home ≈ $59,213 → about $2,277 per biweekly paycheck (74.0% of gross) — before any local Earned Income Tax.

Local Earned Income Tax (EIT) — the part a flat state rate doesn't show

Pennsylvania's simple 3.07% flat rate is only part of the story. Nearly every PA municipality and school district also levies a local Earned Income Tax (EIT), typically adding another 1% to 3.9% depending on where you live and work. Philadelphia is the major exception — it has its own Wage Tax (currently around 3.75% for residents) instead of the standard EIT structure. Because local rates vary block by block across Pennsylvania's roughly 2,500 municipalities, this calculator intentionally shows state tax only; check your local tax collector's rate (often listed on your pay stub as "Local Tax" or "EIT") to get your true total.

Common mistakes when estimating Pennsylvania take-home pay

Frequently asked questions

What is Pennsylvania's state income tax rate?

A flat 3.07% for all taxpayers regardless of income or filing status — there are no brackets.

Does Pennsylvania also have local income tax?

Yes — nearly every PA municipality levies a local Earned Income Tax, typically 1%-3.9%, on top of the 3.07% state rate. Philadelphia uses its own Wage Tax instead.

Why is Pennsylvania's flat tax different from progressive-bracket states?

Every dollar is taxed at the same 3.07% rate in PA, while progressive states like California or New York tax higher income at higher marginal rates.

Does filing status change Pennsylvania's state tax rate?

No — the 3.07% flat rate applies the same regardless of single or married filing status.
