What comes out of a New York paycheck

Net pay = Gross − Federal income tax − NY State income tax − Social Security − Medicare − Pre-tax deductions

New York State applies a progressive bracket schedule with rates from 4% to 10.9%. Unlike states with a single flat rate, each portion of your income is taxed at its own bracket's rate — you don't jump to a higher rate on your entire income just by crossing a threshold.

Worked example — $80,000, single, biweekly, outside NYC

Taxable after $4,000 pre-tax and $15,000 federal standard deduction: $61,000 federal; NY taxable (using the NY standard deduction of $8,000 for single filers): $68,000.

Federal tax ≈ $8,334 · NY state tax ≈ $3,575 · Social Security $4,960 · Medicare $1,160.

Annual take-home ≈ $57,971 → about $2,230 per biweekly paycheck (72.5% of gross) — this example assumes residence outside New York City; NYC residents would owe city tax on top.

Married-filing-jointly brackets use roughly double the thresholds at each rate, so joint filers reach each higher rate at a higher combined income than two single filers would.

New York City residents pay more — a note on local tax

This calculator covers New York State tax only. If you live in New York City (or Yonkers), you also owe a local income tax that state residents outside those cities don't pay. NYC's resident tax rates range from roughly 3.078% to 3.876% depending on income, stacked on top of everything shown here. We're building a dedicated NYC take-home pay calculator to model that combined burden — check back, or use our generic take-home pay calculator with a manual local-rate override in the meantime.

Common mistakes when estimating New York take-home pay

Frequently asked questions

What are New York's state income tax rates?

New York uses a progressive schedule from 4% to 10.9% for 2025, with most middle-income earners falling in the 5.5%-6% range.

Does this calculator include New York City tax?

No — this covers New York State tax only. NYC residents also owe a local tax of roughly 3.078%-3.876% on top of state tax.

Why is my New York take-home pay lower than a no-tax state?

New York has one of the higher state tax burdens in the country, plus NYC's added city tax for city residents — someone earning the same salary in Texas or Florida keeps more.

Do New York tax brackets differ by filing status?

Yes — married-filing-jointly brackets use higher thresholds at every level than single-filer brackets.
