Weighted grade

The formulas

Needed final = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w  (w = final weight as decimal)
Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight
Worked example

Current 85%, final worth 30%, target 90%: (90 − 85×0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7% — not reachable without extra credit. Lower the target to 88% and you'd need 95%.

Using it to plan finals week

This calculator turns anxiety into a number. Enter your passing threshold as the target to see the minimum you need (sometimes reassuringly low), or your dream grade to see how realistic it is. If the required score exceeds 100%, the target isn't reachable through the final alone — time to ask about extra credit or reset expectations. The weighting also shows where effort pays off: points in a heavily weighted final or exam move your grade far more than the same points in light homework. Frequently asked questions

What grade do I need on the final?

(Target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. Over 100% means it's not reachable via the final alone.

How do weighted grades work?

Each category counts for a set % of the total; grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight.

Can I still pass if I fail the final?

Enter your passing threshold as the target to see the minimum final score needed.
