The pace formula

Pace = Time ÷ Distance  ·  Time = Pace × Distance  ·  Distance = Time ÷ Pace
min/km = min/mile ÷ 1.609
Worked example

5 miles in 45:00 → pace = 45 ÷ 5 = 9:00 /mile (≈ 5:35 /km). At that pace, a marathon would take about 3:56.

Using pace to train and race

Knowing your pace turns vague effort into a plan: set a goal finish time, read off the pace you need, and practice holding it. The race-time projections above assume you sustain the entered pace evenly — realistic for shorter distances, optimistic for the marathon, where most runners slow in the later miles. A common approach is easy runs at a conversational pace and shorter, faster intervals near your target race pace. Pair with the target heart rate calculator to keep easy days easy, and the calories burned calculator to fuel long runs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate running pace?

Time ÷ distance. 5 miles in 45 min = 9:00 /mile.

What is a good running pace?

Recreational is often 9–12 min/mile; the right pace is one you can sustain for the distance.

How do I convert min/mile to min/km?

Divide by 1.609. 9:00/mile ≈ 5:35/km (shown automatically).
