How U.S. brackets actually work

Brackets are marginal: each chunk of income is taxed at its own rate, like water filling stacked buckets. Landing "in the 22% bracket" means only the dollars above the 12% bracket's ceiling are taxed at 22% — never your whole income.

Taxable income = Gross − Pre-tax deductions − Standard (or itemized) deduction
Tax = Σ (income in each bracket × that bracket's rate)
Worked example — $80,000, single, 2025

Taxable income: 80,000 − 15,000 standard deduction = $65,000

10% × 11,925 = $1,193 · 12% × 36,550 = $4,386 · 22% × 16,525 = $3,636

Total ≈ $9,215 → effective rate 11.5% of gross, despite being "in the 22% bracket."

This estimate covers federal income tax only — payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare) are handled in the take-home pay calculator, and most states add their own income tax on top. Pre-tax retirement contributions reduce this bill directly, which is part of the 401(k) case.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 2025 federal tax brackets?

Single: 10% to $11,925, 12% to $48,475, 22% to $103,350, 24% to $197,300, 32% to $250,525, 35% to $626,350, 37% above. MFJ thresholds are roughly double through 32%.

Marginal vs. effective rate?

Marginal = rate on your last dollar (your bracket). Effective = total tax ÷ total income — always lower.

Does a higher bracket lower my take-home pay?

No — only dollars above each threshold are taxed at the higher rate. A raise never reduces after-tax income.

What is the 2025 standard deduction?

$15,000 single / $30,000 married filing jointly.
